Bochum's Century Hall has a lofty steel design, giving it a reputation as one the earliest examples of purely functional engineering works. The Petzinka-Pink Architectural Office has reconstructed it with infinite care, transforming it into an icon that walks the tightrope between heritage and modernity – and also a landmark of the New Ruhr Region.
Its venerable façade is aglow with the energy of new architectural elements on the outside while its interior spaces reveal the compelling possibilities of state-of-the-art event equipment. Three different hall dimensions provide the ideal platform for banquets, presentations, concerts, great theatre and minor experiments.
It starts off in the foyer where the visitor is overcome with an air of new frontiers combined with a feeling of tranquillity. Bathed in brilliant light, the glass entrée releases the visitor's eye into the void over the entire length of the Century Hall while a whole series of lounge bars entice you to gaze into the momentary view.
