It's a resonator, and then, once again, a stage. A week later, the venue for a banquet. Flexibility is the sine qua non for a hall with a schedule like this. The Jahrhunderthalle Bochum was originally conceived as a utilitarian industrial building. Its sensitive conversion by the Petzinka-Pink firm of architects has made it a symbol of the successful juxtaposition of the traditional and the modern - both within the region and beyond. Three flexibly configurable halls provide the ideal setting for fairs, exhibitions and concerts, theatre in the grand style, and low-key experiments. Steel and glass form a gigantic portal spanning the length of the hall, and providing access to the light-flooded foyer. The visitor is embraced by an atmosphere of rippling calm. Multiple bars, harmoniously spread across two levels, impart a lounge character to the foyer, bidding the visitor stay.
